Art Seen

This display was in a window on West Sixth in a row of bars. Old TVs and such. With images of video games? A label said it was a work of  'Art Seen Alliance.' As the calendar turns over into a new year, it is appropriate that we look back at old technology.

Truth

Wherever you go in the universe, there is pizza. Truth. Another mural behind Brick Oven on Red River.

Burdened Mural

Not sure what this mural signifies. (It's behind the Brick Oven Restaurant on Red River.) But the whale and, if I'm honest, the punk, look burdened by modern life.

Great food and fun times!

That's us on the right. We had a great time eating at The Carpenters Hall, a local restaurant, the other night. Good pals and delicious food.

Chicken schnitzel

A friend ordered this dish at The Carpenter Hall restaurant the other night and gave me taste. It has black garlic chimichurri sauce on it. Wow-- so good.

Scooter on the sidewalk.

A person in a wheelchair would not be happy about this. These things can be a real nuisance.

Merry Christmas from Austin! (Stephen F. that is!)

I thought that this photo would be appropriate for today -- these portraits of our town's namesake have a holiday glow.

Lobby lights

Here is some of the decoration in our lobby at the condo tower.

Lotta lights!

The big tree at the SF Austin Hotel is full of lights this year. That took some work!

Steer cheer here!

We liked this pretty holiday display on the mantel at the Stephen F. Austin Intercontinental.

Flappers welcome!

Our favorite jazz club -- Parker -- has a Twenties Night each Tuesday. The "Wasabi Big Band" plays amazing tunes from that era.

New Art From Old

The underpass for the railroad and Third Street on North Lamar has had a public artwork for quite some time. (It can be seen in the background of this picture.) The structures resembled traffic signs with signature blue and white tones, set at various angles. Recently, an artist friend of ours collaborated with another artist to temporarily intervene on that artwork. Read all about it here.

There's No Place Like Rhone...

for the Holidays? At June's All Day on South Congress, an employee carefully posts the specials on Rhone Reds! The river and region map is a nice touch, too.

How About a Little Succulent?

FFP waits for me while I take a picture of the succulents outside Farm to Market grocery on South Congress. Might make a great gift for a friend.

Not Just Books

South Congress Books had this vignette on one of their shelves recently. It's not just books at this wonderful shop: there are art, collectibles, and artifacts. This is a great place to shop if you are in Austin.

You Could Have Had it!!

Among the decorations for sale last month at the Settlement Home Garage Sale was this Santa sax player. Several pals of ours could have used it!

Tis the Season

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. And at Tesoros Trading on South Congress even the skeletons are in the spirit.

Watchdogs

Walking through Old West Austin, we encountered these three watchdogs. The two in front barked vociferously and the poodle was drawn up to full impressive height the whole time we walked by. The dog on the porch was so still and silent I thought at first it wasn't real.

More Fall Walking

Also in Old West Austin, FFP walks along by some yellow foliage.

Fall Colors

As you could see yesterday in FFP's picture of Elm Street, Austin got some fall colors this year. Here he is walking through Old West Austin on that walk near some bright red foliage. A lot of the trees in Austin are Live Oaks. They push off brown leaves and instantly replace them. Kind of a deciduous evergreen! But we do have some maples, elms and others that can produce pretty colors. However, to make a nice display it requires a good deal of rain right before fall and an early cold snap. We had both this year.

$600 is serious Cash

You can buy this signed first edition of Johnny Cash's biography if you have a spare $600 burning a hole in your pocket. Available at South Congress Books.

Breakfast at June's All Day

These buckwheat crepes with egg and bacon are one of Linda's favorite dishes at June's.

Old Freddie

It's been a while -- wanted to say hi to Freddie Kruger who is still hanging out on Elm.

Hush those pups!

One of our favorite dishes-- corn and crab hush puppies at Fixe Southern House.

Joy! Theme day -- from us to you!

Here is our Theme Day shot -- and it is also our holiday card this year. We donate to the Paramount Theater, which is located on our town's main street, and one of the perks is that they put our names up in lights. We thought that we would just go ahead and make this photo our greeting card for this year. Have a good season, all of you! To see what how friends around the world who also post on City Daily Photo interpreted "joy," click here.

Wherever in the Universe you go, there's...pizza. Truth. Another wall behind the Brick Oven.

Yes they do!

Dog lovers speak out. Saw this on the side of a vehicle the other day.

Election night

Linda and I decided to go check out the election night at some bars around town. Here she is at The Headliners Club. The only other table had already decamped for a victory party.

Big burger -- and fries

A lunch mate had this massive burger at Cenote the other day. We had just gotten through with taping a podcast for a friend. I don't know how you'd get your mouth around this one. Luckily, they provided a knife and fork!

Truffle tots, yes, truffle tots

Yes, the old and the new -- tater tots with truffle oil. We love them. Another shot from Dirty Martin's.

Monday, November 26, 2018

BLT-- old-fashioned and just right

We went to lunch at Dirty Martin's the other day and Linda ordered this delicious bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich. I want to try that one myself next time.

Sunday, November 25, 2018

Chicken Paillard

Yes, well, I love this dish at June's All Day. Some of the best Chicken Paillard we have ever eaten.

Beet salad -- hard to beat

I was out lunching with a friend the other day and she ordered this beautiful beet salad.

John-Boy and Terrence McNally

We attended the 80th birthday party for Terrence McNally at Zach Theatre here in town a few days ago. Here you see actor Richard Thomas who some of you might remember from "The Waltons," with Terrence.

Monday, November 19, 2018

Quite a lineup

Here is a shot I took at the Birthday Party for Terence McNally the other night. Do you see Chita Rivera in the shot next to Terrence? Also Michael Learned and Richard Thomas, who played "John Boy" on The Waltons.

Anima

I confess that all I know about this photo is that it was found in my shots after a walk around South Lamar. Do you ever take a photo and not remember doing it or exactly where you were?

And now Free!

Scooters have overtaken Austin and now Uber has added incentive of FREE to the mix. These things are everywhere and threaten us on sidewalks and in crosswalks and risk their own life and limb in the street by running lights and stop signs.

Hopping down the Garage Sale Trail

Easter bunnies, Easter eggs, Easter games -- lots of fun items are available for kids and adults at this sale. Plenty of folks were snapping up bargains here.

Thursday, November 15, 2018

Tom Swift, Bobbsey Twins and more

Lots of collectible books were available for interested people at the Settlement Home Garage Sale. It was fun to see some of these titles.
